oil spill after cargo vessels collide MSC Chitra, the outbound cargo vessel from jawharlal nehru Port Trust (JNPT), collided with MV Khalijia-III five nautical miles from the shores at 9:50 am on Saturday.
Traffic was suspended keeping in mind the fact that the ships coming towards Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) may hit the containers in the water causing severe damage.It appears that about 10 to 15 tonnes of diesel of Chitra has spilled into the sea waters due to the collision.
Efforts are on to control the oil spill.After the collision, 200 containers that fell from Chitra are strewn in the water.
Coast guard vessels with anti-pollution equipment have been sent to the spot.
Khalijaa III was the stationary ship that was grounded for repair work.
A helicopter and few ships were pressed into service to control the oil spill.
Clean up work is on at the site and five more vessels were been in on Sunday morning.
